Background of the study
Abandoned wells present unique challenges for forensic investigations, particularly in the identification of human remains. In Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State, remains discovered in abandoned wells are often subject to advanced decomposition and environmental degradation. Forensic anthropology plays a vital role in these investigations by employing techniques such as osteological analysis, DNA profiling, and digital reconstruction to establish victim identities (Okoro, 2023). Recent technological advances have improved identification accuracy; however, issues such as water contamination, structural instability of well sites, and limited forensic resources continue to impede investigations (Eze, 2024). This study examines the role of forensic anthropology in identifying human remains from abandoned wells, aiming to evaluate current methodologies and identify areas for improvement. By integrating forensic evidence with environmental assessments and historical records, the research seeks to enhance victim identification processes, support legal investigations, and provide closure for affected families (Ibrahim, 2025). The study will utilize interdisciplinary approaches, including excavations, forensic laboratory analyses, and archival research. It aims to develop a framework for documenting historical skeletal evidence ultimately ensuring justice, clarity.

Statement of the problem
The identification of human remains from abandoned wells in Ughelli South is hindered by environmental degradation, water contamination, and structural instability at well sites (Okoro, 2023; Eze, 2024). These factors complicate forensic analyses and delay the identification process, thereby impeding legal investigations and closure for affected families (Ibrahim, 2025). Traditional methods often fall short in addressing these challenges, leading to unresolved cases and compromised justice. This study seeks to evaluate current forensic practices and propose improvements to enhance identification accuracy and support effective legal proceedings. Immediate solutions are needed.

Objectives of the study:

  • To assess current forensic methodologies in identifying remains from abandoned wells.

  • To identify challenges affecting forensic analysis in well sites.

  • To propose strategic improvements for enhancing identification accuracy and legal investigations.

Research questions:

  • What forensic techniques are used to identify remains from abandoned wells?

  • What challenges hinder accurate identification in abandoned well investigations?

  • How can forensic methodologies be improved to support legal proceedings in these cases?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Advanced forensic techniques significantly improve identification accuracy in well site cases.

  • H2: Environmental degradation and water contamination negatively affect forensic outcomes.

  • H3: Strategic improvements in forensic practices will enhance legal investigations and victim closure.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it investigates the role of forensic anthropology in identifying human remains from abandoned wells. The research aims to improve forensic methodologies, support legal investigations, and provide closure for affected families. Findings are expected to inform policy reforms, enhance forensic training, and ultimately contribute to more effective disaster response and legal justice in cases involving abandoned wells.

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of terms:

  • Abandoned Wells: Disused well sites that are no longer operational and may pose environmental hazards.

  • Human Remains: Skeletal and other biological tissues recovered for forensic analysis.

  • Digital Reconstruction: The use of technology to recreate visual representations of skeletal remains.
